Pico da Tijuca is the highest mountain of Tijuca National Park. With about 1.000 meters of altitude, it has a privileged city view. The trail runs 2.800 meters and shows the beauty of our Atlantic Forest. It is possible to see several species of local flora and fauna.
Trail starts at Bom Retiro square, 660 meters high. We follow the route to Pico da Tijuca top in about an hour (one way). The walk is a Rio de Janeiro reference in mountaineering practice and it is even indicated for beginners.
To get to the trail beginning, we cross Tijuca Forest, passing through waterfalls and lookouts, such as Chinese View and Emperor's Table Monument, from where you can see the city in different perspectives.
In 1853, a German biologist named Hermann Burmeister opened this track for local flora and fauna research and study.
Our Republic President Epitacio Pessoa, on the occasion of Belgium King Albert I visit - a natural mountaineer, ordered the carving of the 117 steps that give access to the peak. To facilitate this climb, he ordered thick chains to be placed, simulating a railing, to make it easier for those who climbed.
The King, very conservative, did not appreciate this mime. He ignored the stairs and climbed the stone. At the end of the climb, although it was made on a cloudy day, after reaching the top, he praised our nature: "Your country has the most seductive and exciting nature in the world."
