A rock formation at Vidigal neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro. Its top about 500 meters above sea level is higher than Sugar Loaf (395 m), but smaller than Corcovado (704 m). This top can be reached by a trail of 1,5 kilometers of extension. We can still see a sculpture signed by Oscar Niemeyer and a memorial dedicated by Air France in honor to AF-447 flight victims.
The hill attracts tourists who wish to follow the trail that leads to its top. From there it is possible to see the full extent of Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, besides Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Gávea, Corcovado, Rocinha community and São Conrado neighborhood. Access to the trail is close to Vidigal Field and Vila Olímpica Amphitheater. The ride to the top lasts around 50 minutes.
The park's vegetation includes endangered species, including "orquídea das pedreiras", "antúrio das pedras" and the "velózia branca", as well as various bromeliads types. The area is inhabited by star-monkeys, squirrels, possums, bats, as well as birds such as the eared owl, the cockerel, the hawk and the field woodpecker.
This trail is one of those that has the best relationship between physical effort and beauty. It is not very demanding and it compensates with incredible visuals. The place is not very well known at Rio south zone.
When reaching the top, you can see Rio de Janeiro in 360º, overlooking Rocinha, Gávea Stone, Bonita Stone, São Conrado, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and other south zone attractions. In there, you can understand why people say that Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon has a heart shape. You can enjoy taking a break, taking lots of pictures, snacking and putting your energy back to the way down. For a better use of the day and to save energy for the trail, it is possible to go by motorcycle taxi from Niemeyer Avenue to the trail base, that climbs to Vidigal Hill top. Riders of motorcycle taxis offer helmet for use in the route.
A LITTLE OF DOIS IRMÃOS HILL HISTORY
Vidigal, name of the favela that stands neer Dois Irmãos Hill, was one of the most influential men in the city in the 19th century. Around 1.820, he won the land where favela now exists from Benedictine monks. And over almost 200 years, the place has grown and gained different contours for good and evil.
In January of 2012, Pacifying Police Unit was installed in an area that used to live in great conflict. Nowadays, with the increase of security and good reception of the local community, tourists and Rio locals attend this beautiful monument, postcard of our marvelous city.
